Fellowships are open to all categories
of news media, specifically, newspapers, magazines, radio and television; and all
categories of media personnel including producers, photographers, artists, camera crews,
advertising personnel, technicians, reporters, editors, etc.

No fellowship will provide 100% of
the cost of an in-country residency the exchangee or his/her employer are expected
to contribute part of the residency, for example, by providing all or part of the
employees airfare or salary during the residency. This is to ensure commitment on
the part of the exchangee and his/her employer. The amount provided by Medialink will
depend on the circumstances of each applicant, and the host country. Fellowships will not
exceed $A12,000 each except in special circumstances.

In-country
residencies will be for a minimum three months, and up
to 12 months, except in special circumstances. Fellowships (funding)
will not be extended, but exchangees can remain in the host
country after the residency ends at his/her own expense, subject
to arrangements with his/her home and host news organisation,
and compliance with the host countrys immigration rules.

The exchangee will work for the host news organisation and not
for their home organisation (ie, will not be an overseas correspondent/stringer),
although he/she will be encouraged to produce non-news (eg.
feature) articles or broadcast about their host country.

The
exchangee will be expected to live with a host family or colleague/s,
not in a hotel.
|
| 6. |
Generally,
Australian exchangees will be placed with English-language
newspapers / magazines, or radio / TV stations with English
programs, however exchangees fluent in an Asian language can
apply to work for an indigenous news organisation in the relevant
country.

Asian
exchangees must be fluent in English and be prepared to work
in a fast-moving, all-English environment (such as a news room)
where colleagues may not be experienced with English as a second
language. |
| 8. |
There
is no age limit, but exchangees are expected to have a minimum
five years working in the media. |
| 9. |
Preference
will be given to Australian media personnel who have traveled
or worked in Asia, and Asian media who have traveled or
worked in Western countries, or can demonstrate an interest
in or relationship with Australia. |

All
applications must consist of:
- an application form, available from this website
fellowship application form (or email
medialink@asialink.unimelb.edu.au, phone 61 3 9349 1899
or fax 9347 1768 and ask for an application form to be posted)
- a letter of support from the applicants boss
(editor or equivalent) giving an assurance that the exchangee
will not work for the home news organisation during the
residency
- two referees, including at least one from outside
the news media (provide name, position, address, email,
day phone number).

Applications
must be lodged by the stipulated deadline.

Applicants
may be asked to provide additional information or may
be asked to discuss their application over the phone or via
email. This should in no way be seen as an indication of the
applicants success or otherwise in being awarded a fellowship. |

Selection
will be by a specially chosen selection committee drawn from
the news media, business, academia and the arts. Short-listed
applicants may be asked to appear before the selection committee
to elaborate on their application.

Successful
applicants will be expected to begin the residency as
soon as possible after receiving notification of the fellowship.
|
| 16. |
Any ailment,
disability or existing medical condition must be declared
by the exchangee before accepting the fellowship.
|
| 17. |
Health insurance
is mandatory for exchangees and proof of this must be provided before departure,
together with a current health certificate from a registered practitioner.
|
| 18. |
Exchangees
will be responsible for their own travel bookings, passport,
visas, travel and health insurance and tax arrangements.
|
| 19. |
Exchangees
must give an undertaking that they will adhere to the laws and
regulations of the host country.
|
| 20. |
After
the fellowship amount has been decided, the exchangee will be
responsible for all expenses during the residency.
|
| 21. |
Fellowship
recipients will be asked to sign an agreement before accepting
the fellowship.
|
| 22. |
There
is no limit to the number of times an applicant can apply
for a fellowship. Applicants who have not been successful in
one round are encouraged to apply again in the next or subsequent
rounds. |
