Fellowship terms and conditions

These conditions may change at any time, and are current at the time of posting on the Asialink website, according to the date at the bottom of this webpage.

Terms:

  • In-country residency = the program whereby an exchangee lives in a host country and works for a host news organisation
  • Fellowship = an amount of money provided to an exchangee to undertake an in-country residency
  • Exchangee = the fellowship recipient who undertakes the in-country residency
  • Boss = the applicant's employer's representative whom the applicant answers to (normally, the editor)
  • Home organization = the exchangee's employer before the residency began
  • Host = the news organisation in which the exchangee spends his/her residency
  • Referee = a person willing and able to comment on the applicant's suitability for a residency

Conditions:
1. Fellowships are open to all categories of news media, specifically, newspapers, magazines, radio and television; and all categories of media personnel including producers, photographers, artists, camera crews, advertising personnel, technicians, reporters, editors, etc.
2. No fellowship will provide 100% of the cost of an in-country residency – the exchangee or his/her employer are expected to contribute part of the residency, for example, by providing all or part of the employee’s airfare or salary during the residency. This is to ensure commitment on the part of the exchangee and his/her employer. The amount provided by Medialink will depend on the circumstances of each applicant, and the host country. Fellowships will not exceed $A12,000 each except in special circumstances.
3. In-country residencies will be for a minimum three months, and up to 12 months, except in special circumstances. Fellowships (funding) will not be extended, but exchangees can remain in the host country after the residency ends at his/her own expense, subject to arrangements with his/her home and host news organisation, and compliance with the host country’s immigration rules.
4. The exchangee will work for the host news organisation and not for their home organisation (ie, will not be an overseas correspondent/stringer), although he/she will be encouraged to produce non-news (eg. feature) articles or broadcast about their host country.
5. The exchangee will be expected to live with a host family or colleague/s, not in a hotel.
6. Generally, Australian exchangees will be placed with English-language newspapers / magazines, or radio / TV stations with English programs, however exchangees fluent in an Asian language can apply to work for an indigenous news organisation in the relevant country.
7. Asian exchangees must be fluent in English and be prepared to work in a fast-moving, all-English environment (such as a news room) where colleagues may not be experienced with English as a second language.
8. There is no age limit, but exchangees are expected to have a minimum five years working in the media.
9. Preference will be given to Australian media personnel who have traveled or worked in Asia, and Asian media who have traveled or worked in Western countries, or can demonstrate an interest in or relationship with Australia.
10. All applications must consist of:
  • an application form, available from this website fellowship application form (or email medialink@asialink.unimelb.edu.au, phone 61 3 9349 1899 or fax 9347 1768 and ask for an application form to be posted)
  • a letter of support from the applicant’s boss (editor or equivalent) giving an assurance that the exchangee will not work for the home news organisation during the residency
  • two referees, including at least one from outside the news media (provide name, position, address, email, day phone number).
11. Applications must be lodged by the stipulated deadline.
12. Applications should be posted to:
Fellowships, Medialink, The Asialink Centre,
The University of Melbourne, Victoria 3010, Australia
or faxed on 61-3-9347 1768
or email: medialink@asialink.unimelb.edu.au
13. Applicants may be asked to provide additional information or may be asked to discuss their application over the phone or via email. This should in no way be seen as an indication of the applicant’s success or otherwise in being awarded a fellowship.
14. Selection will be by a specially chosen selection committee drawn from the news media, business, academia and the arts. Short-listed applicants may be asked to appear before the selection committee to elaborate on their application.
15. Successful applicants will be expected to begin the residency as soon as possible after receiving notification of the fellowship.
16. Any ailment, disability or existing medical condition must be declared by the exchangee before accepting the fellowship.
17. Health insurance is mandatory for exchangees and proof of this must be provided before departure, together with a current health certificate from a registered practitioner.
18. Exchangees will be responsible for their own travel bookings, passport, visas, travel and health insurance and tax arrangements.
19. Exchangees must give an undertaking that they will adhere to the laws and regulations of the host country.
20. After the fellowship amount has been decided, the exchangee will be responsible for all expenses during the residency.
21. Fellowship recipients will be asked to sign an agreement before accepting the fellowship.
22. There is no limit to the number of times an applicant can apply for a fellowship. Applicants who have not been successful in one round are encouraged to apply again in the next or subsequent rounds.
