Asialink Arts Residency Program Evaluation 2005

"I still reflect upon my experiences living and working in Japan, 8 years after my residency. It was a very important experience, both professionally and personally. There is nothing like working in an environment that is both exhilarating and unfamiliar to develop professional and personal skills, enhance understanding of other ways of working, develop contacts, enhance life experience and appreciate the skills one already has." Jodi Glass, Setagaya Public Theatre, Tokyo 1997/8

From 1991 to 2005 Asialink sent over 370 Australian artists, writers, performers and arts managers to undertake residencies in 15 Asian countries with over 220 host organisations. As a sizeable alumni now exists, we were keen to understand the impact of the residency program over time and identify key areas where the program can develop and improve.

A survey was sent to past residents and was made up of a mix of quantitative and qualitative questions looking at the experience of the residents, the effect of the residency on career and artistic development as well as outcomes and details of future projects. A select group of residency hosts, funders and staff at Australian overseas posts were also asked to provide comment on the Asialink Residency Program, in particular what they saw as the key outcomes of the program in the context of their organisation, the residents, the host community and the Australian community.
