Special Projects
South Asia Program
Under the rubric of the Department of Foreign
Affairs and Trade's Year of South Asia in 1997, Asialink organised
and toured a number of exhibitions to the smaller countries of South
Asia, a practice which continues.
This was a new and rewarding area of exploration
for Australian visual arts and provided the groundwork for future
programs. Audience numbers and interest was high, the level of discussion
sophisticated, and press response pleasing.
Australian curators and artists travelled to each
venue and usually gave at least one talk on contemporary Australian
culture. The exhibitions include:
-
Body and Soul, curated
by the National Gallery of Australia, touring to Bangladesh, Sri
Lanka and Nepal
-
Aurora; Australian wood,
metal, glass, fibre, ceramics, curated by RMIT Gallery touring
to Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
-
Patterning in Contemporary
Art, Layers of Meaning, curated by Canberra School of Art Gallery,
touring to Pakistan
-
Other Stories, curated
by Asialink, touring to Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
- Internal Travel, Hossein Valamanesh, with
Angela Valamanesh, National College of the Arts Gallery, Lahore, Pakistan
- A Transit Through Paradise, Fiona Hall,
Curated by the Queensland Art Gallery at Gallery 706, Colombo, Sri
Lanka
