Sacred ground beating heart

The art of Judy Watson 1989-2003

Sacred ground beating heart is a survey exhibition of Judy Watson’s practice produced over the last fifteen years. Curated by Professor Ted Snell, the exhibition was originally held at the John Curtin Gallery in Perth and the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane, before embarking on its tour of Southeast Asia, as part of the Asialink Visual Arts/Craft Program.

Over the past fifteen years Judy Watson has won national and international recognition for her work; including representation in major survey exhibitions such as the First Asia Pacific Triennial in Brisbane, the Moet & Chandon Fellowship in 1993 and representation in exhibitions in Thailand, South Africa, the United States, New Zealand, France, India, Italy and the United Kingdom.

Sacred ground beating heart presents paintings and prints by Judy Watson that depict a highly personal vision of the land, which is the physical and conceptual framework that underpins her practice. In the exhibition catalogue Ted Snell writes, ‘her work speaks eloquently of the suffering of Aboriginal Australians, the massacres, prejudice and disdain, while simultaneously evoking the dignity and achievements of Aboriginal people. A contemporary artist, she bridges both cultures and works in the space between to create a powerful image of reconciliation and understanding.’

The exhibition toured to Ho Chi Minh City ( South Saigon Arts Center, June 2004), Colombo ( Finomel Gallery, July 2004) and Manila ( Cultural Center of the Philippines, August 2004).
