Helen Agostino was a recipient of a fellowship for the 1997-98 Indonesia study tour. The tour stimulated existing interests in Indonesia and on return to Australia, Helen and Kathy Kiting, former AEF Advisor to the ACT and leader of the AEF's Indonesia study tour, collaborated to write a text for teachers which would support the inclusion of the study of Indonesia in the curriculum. Indonesia Kaleidoscope was commissioned as part of the AEF's dynamic Access Asia series of teaching and learning materials, published by Curriculum Corporation.

Helen's interest in Indonesia began in secondary school is Tasmania. An honors graduate in Asian Studies from the Australian National University, Helen has taught ESL and European and Asian languages at primary, secondary and post-secondary levels. Helen is an Access Asia Network Leader in the ACT and currently teaches at Weetangera Primary School.

As Helen recalled, "The tour provided us with the stimulus and focus for the book. The tours, information and people I met during the TICFA program gave me a much deeper understanding and sense of Indonesia's people and environment".

The text is comprised of six chapters which revolve around traditional folktales taken from each of the following areas of Indonesia -Irian Jaya, Bali, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Java and Sumatra. Helen and Kathy worked on introducing central aspects of Indonesian life through the folktales. They devised Fact Files for each of the regions and resource sheets for students in the Key Learning Areas of English, Society and Environment and the Arts.

The texts have been authenticated by Asian Studies academics and a State and Territories Consultative Group worked to ensure that the teaching and learning strategies responded to local needs.

"Indonesia Kaleidoscope is a direct reflection of our Indonesia TICFA study tour. Our visits to the islands of Java, Bali and Kalimantan enabled us to draw upon our experiences when writing the text and provided the basis for three of the six units which are featured in the book. Without the study tour and related experiences, the contents of the book would not have been as rich and diverse."

Indonesia Kaleidoscope was released in April1999 and may be purchased through Curriculum Corporation on (03) 9207 9600 or toll free on 1800 337 405.
