The Asia Education Foundation's (AEF) TICFA Program is a professional development program that aims to provide Australian educators the opportunity to experience first hand the peoples, cultures and issues of the countries of Asia and to enhance skills and discipline knowledge of the studies of Asia.

The Indonesian tour provides participants with opportunities to examine diversity and similarities of life in the provinces of North Sulawesi and Bali. The program is designed to assist participants to reflect contemporary life, taking into account the varied urban and rural landscapes, socio-cultural setting, cultural trading and heritage of these provinces.

The first part of the tour focuses on Bali where participants will take part in an orientation program as well as a series of workshops that focus on traditional and contemporary Balinese arts. The group will then travel to Manado, the provincial capital of North Sulawesi. Participants will experience a 5-day homestay program with local a family that includes school visits providing a wide range of experiences and understanding of contemporary Indonesia. The University Neggeri Manado (UNIMA) will provide Australian teachers with seminars and workshops on the history, geography, culture, traditions and religions of North Sulawesi.

There are two phases to the Indonesia program:

Phase 1: will occur as part of the in-country study tour component in January 2003. Participants will be involved in a five-day homestay program in Manado with local families and include visits and teaching in a local school.

Phase 2: will occur in Australia in October 2003. Eleven Indonesian teachers will participate in a twelve-day program in Australia; including a six-day homestay program with the Australian teacher they were hosted with in Manado during January.

The Indonesia Study Tour very generously receives financial support from the Australia-Indonesia Institute.

This has been a very special professional development for me that has given me an opportunity that I would never have been able to experience otherwise - the attitudes, knowledge and experiences I can share in my teaching have been developed a hundredfold. I thoroughly enjoyed the company of my fellow teachers while learning so much about the areas we visited, customs and culture in enjoyable tropical scenery and wonderful tour experiences.
Heather Freemantle, Maryborough Primary School, VIC
This has been an experience I don't think could ever be equalled. I have grown personally, professionally, spiritually, socially and personally. I look forward to the work that I can now do with colleagues, students and parents. I will eagerly be encouraging other staff to apply for a TICFA programs.
Gwen Johnston, St. Mary's Star of the Sea, NSW
I can and I did! Travelled, survived the heat, tight schedules and the homestay. If I can, anybody can! I have made great friendships (both in Australia and Indonesia) learnt amazing things (both personally and professionally and had a fantastic time. I have thousands of wonderful memories that I'll talk about for years
Vivienne Watson, Hughes Primary School, ACT
Professionally, I have gained invaluable information regarding Indonesian culture, far removed from the exotic that I will be able to utilize incidentally and in a planned manner with my students and colleagues. It was fantastic to experience and share this with a wonderful group of Australian educators from all fields of education and get a cross fertilization of ideas and experiences
Julianne Timmers, Esperance School, WA
This tour gave me a greater understanding of why we need to teach Asian studies in our schools. Our nearest neighbours are vastly different to us but yet similar in so many other ways. I received first hand experiences of everyday life that I will share with my students and colleagues. I will also be able to encourage and support Asian studies.
Helen Jewell, Sale Primary School, VIC
This tour was a unique experience. The varied experiences: cultural, social, educational and personal have been wonderful and I have enjoyed and gained form every possible moment. This will be an experience that I will treasure.
Anne Maree Kitchener, St. Mary's Star of the Sea, NSW
My knowledge and understandings of Indonesia have enhanced beyond anything I could ever have thought possible. I have gained years worth of program in only three weeks.
Janet MacKenzie, Cooee Primary School, TAS
Personally, this program provided me with the opportunity to further develop my Bahasa Indonesia whilst making new friends and learning more about the culture and environment of Bali and North Sulawesi. I had a wonderful time participating in this project and collecting materials, resources and photos for my curriculum program.
Deborah Hutton, St Francis Xavier School, NSW
The warmth and enthusiasm of the Indonesian people that I met in my school and in the homestay gave me such a deeper understanding that I would have been able to gain if I was a tourist. I was not just someone to sell something to, I was a person with a different background, a family and someone to talk to and share experiences and knowledge. Indonesia has now become personal interest to people, its culture and me.
Debra Ellery, Kingsway Christian College, WA
